National Conference of Bar Presidents

Officers and Executive Council

The Officers and Executive Council are the Board of Directors of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP). NCBP Officers include the president, president-elect, treasurer, secretary and immediate past president. Members of the Council serve three-year terms, and work with the NCBP Officers to govern and administer all NCBP programs. Executive Council members are selected by the NCBP Nominating Committee during the Annual Meeting in August each year. When selecting Council members, the Nominating Committee considers past service to the NCBP through its committees; ethnic, regional and bar association (state bar service and regional or local bar service) diversity; as well as the qualifications, talents, ideas and resources that each prospective candidate will bring to the Council.

Karol Corbin Walker is the 2012-2013 NCBP president. Ms. Walker is a past president of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Garden State Bar Association, which is New Jersey’s statewide African American attorney group. She is a member of the ABA House of Delegates as well as the ABA Standing Committee on Federal Judicial Improvements. Ms. Walker is also the current chair of the National Bar Association’s Budget Committee. She is a shareholder in the law firm of LeClairRyan and is resident in its Newark, New Jersey office. Carl D. Smallwood is president-elect and will serve as NCBP president in 2013. A partner in the Columbus, Ohio office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, Smallwood represents clients in litigation, arbitration and mediation of employment-related injury, wrongful termination, professional negligence and toxic exposure disputes. In addition to membership within the Ohio State Bar Association, the Columbus Bar Association and the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, Smallwood has served in the ABA House of Delegates and as a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services. Rew R. Goodenow is the NCBP Treasurer. He will succeed to the office of president-elect and ultimately will serve as NCBP president in 2014. In the Reno, Nevada office of Parsons Behle & Latimer, Goodenow serves as legal counsel to businesses in all phases of their development and operations, from start-up to market leader. Active within the American Bar Association, he is a member of the ABA House of Delegates and the ABA Journal Board of Editors. Additionally, Goodenow was president of the State Bar of Nevada in 2006-2007 and a member of the NCBP Executive Council. Lanny Lambert is the NCBP Secretary. He will succeed to the office of Treasurer in 2014. He is past president of the South Carolina Bar Association (2007-2008). Lanny joined Turner Padget in 1986, after serving as in-house counsel with a real estate development and mortgage banking company. He works regularly with municipalities on various business, real estate and financial matters. He has served on the firm’s Management Committee from 1997 to 1999, and he was the managing shareholder and president of Turner Padget from 2000 until 2008. Ms. Squillante was the President of the Massachusetts Bar Association in 2010-2011. Ms. Squillante is a Massachusetts delegate to the American Bar Association's House of Delegates and was co-chair of the joint MBA/Boston Bar Association Alimony Task Force. She was also appointed to a legislative task force that drafted major alimony reform legislation enacted in 2011. Squillante is a former president of the Fall River and New England bar associations. Mr. Cooper was the Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 2010. Virginia Davis Ms. Davis was the President of the Maine State Bar Association in 2009. She has been involved with environmental law issues for more than 20 years. As counsel to the Maine State Housing Authority, Ms. Davis was in charge of its legal affairs and oversaw its bond financings. As counsel to the Natural Resources Council of Maine, she oversaw legal initiatives, including court actions as well as legislative and administrative strategies.
