President's Message - Why Join NCBP

A good friend of mine regularly admonished me that there were “only 24 hours in a day.” He was referring, of course, to the fact that regardless of what I did, I could not make the day longer or squeeze in anything else. Time is finite. With all of the competing demands on my time—-my family, my practice, my community service work—I have often asked myself why I continue to be involved in bar work and in particular, the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP). The reasons are simple-  I relish the opportunity to help other bar leaders be better leaders (this is the NCBP's mission) and my life is enriched by the relationships developed through the NCBP and other bar activities that I would otherwise never enjoy. NCBP Installs New Secretary, Executive Council Members

The National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) installed Kay H. Hodge, of Boston, Massachusetts, as its president and elected five new members of the executive council, as well as the secretary for the 2007-2008 organizational year. Lonnie Williams, then-immediate past president of NCBP and chair of the nominating committee, announced the slate at the end of the organization’s annual meeting in San Francisco. Read more

NCBP Offers Diversity Scholarships for Bar Leaders of Color

In support of its commitment to diversity, the NCBP will provide registration fee waivers to the president or president-elect of bar associations for lawyers of color for attendance at the upcoming midyear meeting in Los Angeles and the 2008 annual meeting in New York. Read more

Acclaimed Documentary Producer Addresses NCBP Members At 2007 Annual Meeting

The 2007 Annual Meeting of the National Conference of Bar Presidents was held in San Francisco, August 9-11. Award-winning documentary director/producer Bill Jersey was the opening plenary speaker on Friday, August 10. Using excerpts from four of his films, Mr. Jersey explained how bar leaders can avoid common messaging mistakes and maintain a sense of humanity while addressing difficult legal issues. Expanding Access to Justice Through Technology

This workshop featured a range of online options available to bar associations seeking to further the delivery of legal services to the poor. Moderated by John Cruden, past president of the District of Columbia Bar and member of the NCBP Executive Council, the session featured panelists Gabrielle Hammond, executive director of the Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project; Mark O’Brien, director of probono.net; and Melvin White, president of the District of Columbia Bar. Cultivating Tomorrow’s Diverse Bar Leaders Today

Karol Corbin Walker, then chair of the NCBP Diversity Committee and member of the NCBP Executive Council, moderated a one-hour session featuring winners of the 2007 ABA Partnership Awards Program. The award-winning projects included creative pipeline initiatives that encourage minority students to pursue legal careers, as well as programs that facilitate the retention of minority lawyers at large law firms. Produced by the Metropolitan Bar Caucus, this workshop explained how metro bars can assist solo and small firm lawyers and in their practices. Public Education in the
Era of Nancy Grace and Paris Hilton


Effective public education was the topic of a panel discussion moderated by Kay Hodge, then president-elect of the NCBP. The panelists were J. Vincent Cook, immediate past president of the State Bar of Georgia, and Robert S. Peck, president of the Center for Constitutional Litigation.

Mr. Peck described a Florida Justice Teaching Institute, where judges participated as teachers, and taught about the court system and the rule of law.

Revolution in Aging
– A Talk for All Ages


Chris Crowley, co-author of the best-selling Younger Next Year series, was the keynote speaker for the Saturday plenary session. A retired litigation partner at the New York law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell, Mr. Crowley related to the audience quite well. He explained how older men and women can reverse the aging process by incorporating physical and emotional fitness into their daily routine, thereby becoming functionally younger. Read More

Michael H. Rubin, past president, Louisiana State Bar Association and past member, NCBP Executive Council was named the 2007 Louisiana State University Law Center Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.

The Hon. Douglas S. Lang, past president of the NCBP and the Dallas Bar Association (DBA), received the Morris Harrell Professionalism Award at the DBA Annual Meeting on November 2, 2007.
